He rose to prominence in the late 1990s with his debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot (1998), which was both a critical and commercial success. His follow-up, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (1998), solidified his status, making him the second rapper after Tupac Shakur to release two No. 1 albums in the same year. His third album, ...And Then There Was X (1999), became his best-selling project, featuring the hit single Party Up (Up in Here). DMX continued his streak with The Great Depression (2001) and Grand Champ (2003), becoming the first artist to have five consecutive albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
